Research Objective
A Leading pharmaceutical company wanted to understand the usage and perceived need gaps for pen insulin so that the market mix could be strengthen accordingly. It was a multi-center study for Rural India

Methodology
In-depth one to one sessions at the Consumer homes, online interactions with Medical Practitioners, Dieticians and Chemists.

- We spoke to the family and caretakers to find out more about the patients and tried understanding the barriers and motivators for Pen Insulin
- We focused on finding the reasons for the recommending Pen Insulin and the general reasons of accepting and rejecting Pen Insulin y patients and their family members
- We were keen in finding if the dietitian influences the usage of Pen Insulin
- The main objective was to understand the role played by the Chemist in introducing the Pen Insulin even if not recommended by the Physician
Learnings
- Pen Insulin is preferred by many people with diabetes over traditional Insulin injection method
- The target market for Pen Insulin products includes people with diabetes who require regular Insulin injections to manage their blood sugar level, this includes both type I and type II patients who are on the insulin therapy
- Convenience, portability, accuracy, safety, precision, close monitoring of blood sugar levels, discreetness’, customization, cost effectiveness were some of the important motivators
- Pen Insulin are safer as it reduces the risk of needle stick injuries and infections
- Gives a feeling of mental peace and happiness
- Can be easily given by the caregivers
- Dietician provide dietary advice on the basis of Insulin intake prescribed by the Physician. They do have a role to suggest, introduce or talk about Pen Insulin but do not recommend it
- There are different brand of Insulin available in the market, including rapid-acting, long-acting, and combination insulin.
- Chemists do play a role in the sale of Pen Insulin. Theyare spoken by the elderly patients and the caregivers
- Chemists explain and even send help for administering Insulin. They are brand influencers too
Barriers
- It is considered expensive by some patients and caregivers as it is a lifelong process and allergic reactions do happen that can be severe too
- It can not be given to patients with severe hypoglycemia, kidney or liver ailments
- The device requires precise handling and administration which can be difficult for patients with impaired vision and dexterity
- Patients in the rural areas suffered from issues of fear of needles, social stigma and embarrassment, self injecting, Lack of social support and knowlwdge
